This is the same patient, whose case study we have previously published on our blog: Patient No. 315, Session 1.
She has blogged about her experience and shared the result of her surgeries with Dr Arthur Tjandra of Elixir de Vie, on Realself.com.
She came to Dr Arthur Tjandra of Elixir de Vie 13 months ago for fat injection to fill up her sunken mid-face. Close to 90% of the fat retains after 13 months. However, she would like to have more volume in her cheeks. As there is variability in survival of grafted fat cells, some patients find it necessary to get top-ups. The advantages of using one’s own fat instead of fillers are:
- There is unlikely to be any reaction to one own’s fat cells, unlike fillers which are chemicals manufactured in a lab.
- It is a lot cheaper to use one’s own fat because there is abundance of fat, even in the slimmest patients! One’s fat is free-of-charge. Surgeons only charge for their service, but not the fat. Fillers are charged by the volume. Each 1 cc syringe typically costs at least USD 500-1000. To fill up entire sunken mid-face one may need up to 10-15 cc!
- Fillers only fill up volume and do nothing else. Fat cells contain stem cells, hormones (especially estrogen) and fat-soluble vitamins, which are all good for the skin, and may make it appear more radiant.
- If grafted properly and survive, fat cells potentially last indefinitely. Fillers typically last for up to one year.
For the above reasons, Dr Arthur Tjandra of Elixir de Vie prefers to use fat over fillers.
